While many people have stated this Kalashnikov variant is an RPK, it is in fact an RPK-74, which looks virtually identical but, during the Vietnam era, featured a longer muzzle brake. Theoretically though, Treyarch may have modelled any muzzle brake they wanted in the front of this LMG. The original Ruchnoy Pulemjot Kalashnikova was, as to be expected, based on the infamous Kalashnikov series of AK assault rifles, firing the same intermediate 7.62x39 mm rounds. Shortly after the Americans decided small caliber weapons were the way to go with the AR-15 platform, the Soviets came up with 5.45x39 mm cartridges, which became their high-velocity alternative to the 7.62mm, and this resulted in the AK-74 assault rifle. The light machine gun variant was developed in the same year, and logically became known as the RPK-74.
